What is Spam
Between 85 - 95% of all emails is spam!
Spam consists of unsolicited emails sent in bulk often promoting dubious products and/or services. Spam doesn't just affect emails - it also affects Instant Messaging, Chat rooms, Online Game Rooms, Search Engines, Blogs, Guest Books, Video Sharing Sites, Mobile Phones - in short almost every form of electronic communication is affected by this phenomenon.
The cost to businesses in dealing with spam is extremely high:-
- Time spent by each member of staff going through their mail deleting spam before they can get to the information required to do their job.
- Viruses and other forms of malware causing downtime and the subsequent loss of work time while the problem is fixed.
- Higher specification equipment is needed to cope with the deluge of unwanted mail
- Identity theft, financial fraud and data theft
- Search engines inundated with pages that are useless - this increases search time and the cost of each query
- Exposure to pornography or other unsuitable material - Spammers have no conscience about sending 'porn' to your 5 year old daughter!
In the last three months of 2007 the top countries for spreading spam were:-
- U.S.A - 28.4%
- South Korea - 5.2%
- China (inc Hong Kong) - 4.9%
- Russia - 4.4%
- Brazil - 3.7%
- France - 3.6%
- Germany - 3.4%
- Turkey - 3.2%
- Poland - 2.7%
- Great Britain - 2.4%
- Romania - 2.3%
- Mexico - 1.9%
- The rest of the world - 33.9%
Antispam software removes most if not all of these emails thereby protecting businesses and their employees from potential threats and the inappropriate content of many of these emails as well as preventing downtime, fraud and theft.
